blah BLAH bLAH…some days i need more hours

NO one wants to hear about how you BUSY you are… blah blah blah.  So, as i write this post i feel as though there are a million other important things (setting up wholesale accounts for PUNK'S, cleaning my house, wrapping presents, paying bills, finding Caymus' two week late library book, finishing my book on blurb for christmas gifts, and helping Grant with all the stuff that goes into opening a restuarant) i should be doing but i can't help but share what i saw last night…
So i begin this with,
I Love how Still Art Makes Me Feel
And the film i saw last night did just that-made me STILL///

i could wonder aimlessly around in a museum all day and stare at art but i haven't seemed to fit it in my schedule lately.  So squeezing in a movie with Grant is the perfect way to feel as if i got away!

Spinning PLATES captured my attention and pulled at my heart in so many ways.  it's a documentary about three restaurants: A three michelin star Chicago restaurant, a 150- year- old restaurant in Iowa and a small Taqueria.  It narrates how each survive and triumph and at the heart of it all how restaurants bring togetherness.  You can't leave without feeling a new respect for the restaurant business… From someone who works so hard at their craft to be the best in the world, who would rather die from tongue cancer than to not be able to taste.  A small town mom and pop family run restaurant who have overcame so much as a town, who show how to put others before yourself.  To a husband who thinks his wife cooks like an angel, who struggle to keep afloat on their mortgage.  The film shows much more than the glitz and glam that so many people seem to think restaurant biz is about.  It's a Struggle, A Ride & A Bond.

During the film, I thought about how the characters reminded me of the characters in my life.  How we are bonded to so many humans in this community because of our restaurants.  i could relate to all three of the restaurants.  i grew up in a small town going to a family owned and operated restaurant two to three nights a week- to finally getting my first job at 16 as a hostess there.  Restaurants have always been something i loved and now with it being our livelyhood it is what we eat, breathe & sleep.  there is so much hard work, dedication, creativity, and love that must go into each plate.  The Behind the scenes is insane- you have to start all over the next day!  the client usually only sees the beautiful plate of food-a documentary of what shows all the elements that go into that plate would be interesting.  from dirty plate to clean plate and all the steps along the way.  it definitely takes a group/team and it's so beautiful to watch how it comes together.   i relate it to a well choreograph production!  We are so lucky to have such a dedicated staff amongst us!  We live out of fear everyday.  it truly takes a different breed!  Thomas Keller says restauranteurs/chefs all want to nourish people and what could be a better profession?   Each restaurant has it's own way of doing things from spending 12 hours on a two bite dish like Alinea does, to just the fundamental ideas of providing comfort and happiness-a get away!  i was crying at the end not only because i could relate so much but because it was dedicated to his Father, Leon.  What if Caymus did that one day for his dad?  i hope he sees the drive, dedication, and love his Dad has for what he does and how much happiness his profession brings him!

We all have to eat but we get to choose who we share it with.  When i cook for my friends and family i always want to surprise them or make them say WOW!  i could spend all day cooking and sometimes do, i just get lost in it and nothing else matters.  Food is so important to us!

Spinning Plates brought such stillness and vulnerability that i left Sundance with a renewed sense of challenge within myself!  You can't give up and it isn't easy!  So many people ask about how hard the restaurant hours are for our family, and it's hard and i only know the half of it, but i guess it's a little easier knowing the reasons why he does it and for that i am forever grateful.
In the name of food
