bohoEATS…Healthy Ginger Chicken + Bok Choy

i LOVE Asian food but don't like some of the heavy sauces -so I try to get inspiration from what I love and try to make it healthier but still flavorful   Lately, I have been trying to cook, grocery shop and cleanup more efficiently.  This dish is easy, healthy and We Love it.

1 package of organic chicken breasts, diced- I love using poultry shears to cut chicken into perfect squares.
3 tablespoons of fresh grated ginger-take the back of the spoon and scrape the ginger to remove the peel and use a microplane.
1 lemongrass stalk
3 scallions chopped green & white parts
2 tablespoons of olive oil or avocado oil
1 gallon ziploc bag
1 shredded organic carrot use cheese grater
1 cup Organic Low Sodium Chicken Broth

1 bunch of organic bok choy chopped ( you will need 1 tablespoon of olive oil)
2 cups of Organic quinoa -cook according to directions (you could do this the night before)(i like to use chicken or veggie stock instead of water, it gives it more flavor)

put all ingredients except bok choy, quinoa, and chicken broth in ziploc bag seal and leave over night in refrigerator.  Sauté ingredients from bag in nonstick skillet over medium high heat until chicken is cooked through.  Add 1/2 c of chicken broth in skillet and simmer.  remove lemongrass.

Sauté with 1 tablespoon of olive oil with bok choy over medium heat until tender add other 1/2 c of chicken broth to bok choy and simmer.  Add chicken mixture to boo choy and simmer for a couple of minutes.

Serve over quinoa

Prohibition Pre-Sale Tickets to Support The Moonlight Dolls!

Steve & I hard at work in The Moonlight Dolls Studio.

Family, Friends & Faithful bohoBlackies,

I wanted to reach out to you all regarding a fundraiser we are doing for The Moonlight Dolls. The goal is to create a timeless show that will be a true landmark and vacation destination for the great city of Houston.

A little back story:
The Moonlight Dolls, formerly a part of Prohibition, have broken off and formed their own company, The Moonlight Dolls LLC. We are raising money to help kick start this new company by pre-selling dinner & show tickets as well as other merchandise and party packages. Show tickets will be redeemable for a dinner & show of your choice at our new venue, opening March 2014. All sales up until January 25th will go back to The Moonlight Dolls. In turn, we promise to deliver a bad-to-the-bone show for you to enjoy again and again.

You can make your purchase by clicking the link below. As you scroll down you can view the different sale items on the right-hand panel of the screen. If you don't feel like fartin' around on some website, message me and I'll do the legwork for you. No pun intended. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/495210287/burlesque-in-houston-and-the-moonlight-dolls?ref=live

If any of you are ever in the downtown area, please give me a call. I would love to show you around the new venue and dance studio.  I love y'all and thank you.

Dear Clark, I love my shampoo.

My mom loves patchouli.  Which, if you are unfamiliar with the smell, the urban dictionary defines patchouli as: Hippie perfume...smells like forest, pot and snuggling. I kind of love that definition.  And I really love my mom, so naturally I have always loved the smell of patchouli.  I didn't realize it was a hippie smell until I was in college and I overheard an ex-boyfriend saying "her mom is a total hippie, she wears patchouli".  It's like when Daron (my brother-in-law) came to a family gathering for the first time and noticed my Aunt's mullet. Those things that are staring you in the face, but you don't notice until someone else points it out.  I'm rambling.
Back to my shampoo, on a girls trip with the lovely girl crush Carla (who has AMAZING hair btw), I used her shampoo and was instantly hooked!  It smells natural and delicious, a bit like patchouli, but very sophisticated feminine patchouli.  It reminded me of my mom, of growing up and if they made a perfume that smells like this shampoo I would wear it every single day.  It's made in Texas by two Dallas hair stylists with natural ingredients FROM Texas and the yummy scent comes from pure and powerful essential oils.  It's not cheap ($22), and you have to order online, but I promise it's a splurge you get to smell all day and my hair feels better than ever.
You can purchase HERE.  And if you are not into shampoo or patchoui, here is a pic of Mo.  >>-----> Because everybody is into gorgeous babies right?

Happy Friday folks!
Love,
bohoSarah

Motherhood Meltdown Number 1 million. Does my two year old need to be in school?!??!?

I am pretty sure this is completely normal, and if it is, then you can all just agree with me and we can move right along with our fear that we have royally screwed up as parents. If it's not normal then lie to me.
Basically my irrational mom-worry started when Driscoe decided he no longer wanted to breast feed at 10 weeks and I was forced to quit. Great, now we'll have to give him gasp FORMULA, and he'll never grow up to be a healthy, loving child....major mom fail?!!!
He is fine.

Then it was the bottle. Doctors orders, no more bottle at 1. We stopped at 2. For a FULL year I thought his teeth were going to rot out of his mouth. I was just waiting for them to literally fall right out of his gums onto his pillow at night while he drank his bottle!
His teeth are fine.

You would think I've learned that these worries are irrational and stupid, that he is going to be just fine and I would stop wasting time and energy on worries. Well I haven't.

Currently my new worry is SCHOOL. Ughhh, the dreaded school talk. I've been hearing about schools in Houston since I moved here in 2004. Private vs. Public, waiting lists, admissions, legacies (that word makes me cringe), HISD, zoning, magnet program, blah blah blah blah blah. I grew up in Freeport! You went to the public elementary school closest to your house, and then to the same intermediate school and the ONLY high school in town, nothing worth discussing - much less worrying about.  So all this school talk is SUPER foreign to me and I kind of hate it. I've had it in my head that when it comes time for Kindergarten, maybe pre-school, Driscoe will go to the school we are zoned to, and for the most part I ignore the school convos because I don't have to worry with it until he is maybe 4.
Well, apparently kids start school at 1 in Houston.

Now I find myself printing applications trying to get him enrolled in some sort of PRE PRE PRE school.  My worried mind wonders if he needs some socialization and teachers and rules and order? But he still craps in his pants? And if other kids are already in school and he isn't will he be behind when his small town mom FINALLY enrolls him at gasp AGE 4!?  And maybe get held back?  or Fail? And now I am missing Freeport and that small town simplicity.

No pants, one sock, Ivy League ready.

The good news is, I was talking to our close friend Dacia the other day who has daughters in high school. She said she STILL freaks out about this kinda stuff. For her its SAT prep courses, college applications and feeling like she is going to forget one or the other; ruining their chance at a good college and destroying their future. So, I have at least 18 more years of this. Oh motherhood.

Marcus Luttrell – What A Mighty Good Man!

I wrote this post a little over a year ago while Lone Survivor was being filmed. Even though I do not know Mr. Luttrell personally, I still feel very close to this story after participating in the Boot Run with him back in 2012. I thought I would re-post this in order to share his inspiring story once again and also to raise awareness for the Lone Survivor Foundation and the Boot Campaign.

On Sunday, November 25, 2012 I participated in Boot Run Houston -  a fundraiser owned by Melanie & Marcus Luttrell. Marcus Luttrell is a United States Navy SEAL and also the author of ‘Lone Survivor', a memoir accounting the details of an important event dating back to 2005 involving Luttrell and his teammates from the Navy SEAL Team TEN.  Luttrell and SEAL Team Ten were on a reconnaissance (sniper) mission that took place in the mountains of Afghanistan. After coming across three Afghan shepherds the team made a unanimous decision to let the shepherds go. Shortly thereafter, SEAL Team Ten was attacked by about 150 Taliban members. Luttrell was the only one out of his teammates to survive enemy attacks. He was then taken in by Afghan villagers who were opposed to the Taliban. Following a 2,000 year old custom, the villagers promise to protect any person who asks for assistance just as Luttrell had done. The Taliban put a bounty on his head and threatened to kill everyone in the village; still the villagers did not surrender the Navy SEAL. Surrounding villages had also pulled in to help protect the soldier. In the end the villagers sent a messenger to the nearest U.S. base to secure Luttrell’s safe release and ultimately save his life. I had the pleasure of participating in the Boot Run on Thanksgiving weekend to help raise money for the village that protected Marcus Luttrell. Luttrell’s motto is ‘Never Quit’. I watched him live this out as the injured Navy SEAL crossed the finish line after a grueling 13.2 miles. Did I mention he’d just had a metal rod set in his back before the race? It was unbelievable. In his humble character he would probably deny this statement however Marcus Luttrell is truly a modern day hero. He teaches us that it doesn’t matter what line of work you are in – CEO, teacher, Navy SEAL – we all have the chance to follow in his footsteps. When the going gets tough, start killing people. Kidding. When the going gets tough, keep trucking. Keep pushing. Remember your fundamentals and stay focused on your goal. For Luttrell, this meant being on the front line and seeing his best friends and teammates fall victim to enemy attacks, but he will say himself that he was simply doing his job. We have a lot to learn from people like Marcus and the fallen men of SEAL Team Ten. I hope their story will inspire you just like it did me and my family (all three of my nephew’s even have Marcus Luttrell one-zies).

If you’re interested in helping U.S. war veterans then you can donate to the Lone Survivor Foundation or the Boot Campaign. The Boot Campaign’s goals are to Cultivate Awareness, Promote Patriotism, and Provide Assistance for our military when they come home. Spread the word! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! Oh! And if you’re not from the USA then perhaps you can find (or start!) something for your own war veterans.

One love, ~grace

Our wedding {Part I}

I am so excited to share pics from the most amazing, magical, special, wonderful, glorious, blessed, lovely (you get the drift) day of my life!  There are a ton.  And I have had a hard time narrowing them down, so I'm posting in 2 separate posts and trying to keep in some sort of order but I can't make any promises.

Getting ready was a blast.  I might have stayed up a wee too late the night before and was a bit foggy the morning of.  But some coffee, girlfriends, Do or Dye's  beautiful salon, adrenaline and some more coffee whipped me right into shape!  My favorite part of getting ready was definitely seeing my Dad for the first time and watching the babies.  Dax, I think, was the most nervous person of the day.  He had a constant whine I've never heard him do before and we had no clue if he was going to make it down the aisle.  He made it, running and crying and when the doors opened for my Dad and I Jason was holding him.  It was a perfectly sweet sight I will never forget.  Cart before the horse = high five!
