Family Day Ideas // Color Fun Fest 5K 2014

Let's get phys-ical, phys-ical!

Join bohoBlack in the Color FunFest 5K on November 1st at Sam Houston Race Park.

Color Fun Fest benefits Free Arts for Abused Children:

Free Arts programs inspire hope in the lives of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, poverty and homelessness through innovative creative arts programs and positive interactions with caring adult volunteers.

Free Arts envisions a society of individuals from different communities, cultures and life experiences connecting through the healing power of art to interrupt the cycle of violence, create understanding, build self-esteem and nurture better lives.

We're in! And we have a discount code!

Here's the rundown:

Color FunFest has two 'waves': the Day Wave and the Night Wave

Day Wave Leaves at 5 pm
Night Wave Leaves at 7 pm

Day Wave Packet Pickup - 2 pm
Night Wave Packet Pickup - 4 pm

There are five color stations that blast runners with colored corn starch as they pass by. By the end of the run, everyone is covered from head to toe in neon colors. It sounds absolutely ridiculous, which is why we're so excited about it. Seems like a fun way to spend quality time with the family and get the kids involved in a worthwhile cause.

Our family friend Melisa (you may remember the KILLER bohoBodies post that she wrote HERE) attended the Color Fun Fest last year with her kids and had great things to say:
"Last year was our first year to do the Color Run and it far exceeded my expectations! My whole family did it (3 kids - 5 yo, 4yo and 2 yo) and we LOVED it!! My kids giggled the whole time and loved getting messy! We will definitely do it again this year!!"

Use promo code BOHOBLACK to receive a $30 entry fee for adults (Regular Price $60)

Non-Adult Prices:
Festival Non-Runner: $10
Kids & Non-Runners: $5

Wardrobe Mistress // The Story Behind The Costuming

Lian Pham, better known as the Wardrobe Mistress, is an extremely gifted human being. In addition to being an entrepreneurial powerhouse -she ran successful promotions company for 13 years before opening Prohibition with business partner Anh Mai in 2012- she is a woman full of passion and divine creativity. As the fledgling burlesque show at Prohibition began to take shape, Lian took on the critical role as The Moonlight Dolls' in-house costumer.

In preparation for this post, I asked her to send me three things that inspire her most when it comes to her costuming. She is a woman of few words and so I did not want to press her. What I received back was a very inspiring story that only she can tell:

So every 2nd generation Vietnamese grows up hearing stories of how their parents fled their country for freedom, to the land of opportunity. I always grew up hearing my parents story, dad was a lawyer and mom was an accountant, both had college educations but lost everything when they fled to America. They had to start all over. My dad's first job was given to him by a lady who asked him if he could turn her black leather skirt to hot pink (this was the 80's). He took the job, scraped the leather and dyed it hot pink! She was very happy and gave him their first TV. Ever since then, I've always looked at material not for what it is but what it can be...and that has stuck with me. My parents are my true inspiration.

That was the beginning of their new career. They got sponsored by a group from Little Rock, AR. That's where I was born and also where they opened their first shop. I grew up around it [tailoring]. I helped my mom take orders and sew buttons, I did very basic stuff on the machine. It was definitely not something I wanted to do, it just sort of fell into my lap.

After opening Prohibition, we chose burlesque as a choice of entertainment since it fit the era.  After buying some of our first costumes, I was inspired to make the costumes myself and that's how the whole costuming part started.

I think every artist looks at different pictures for inspiration. I would say vintage photos of burlesque performers are where I find mine.

At the end of the day it goes back to my parents. They have taught me that I can do anything, and anything is possible. A lot of people have parents that support them with words; I don't think my parents have ever actually told me they supported me. It has always been done through actions. They have always helped me in some sort of physical way, ever since I was a child. Even to this day helping me with costumes, buying me books .....They really believe in me and in return, gave me confidence which really made me believe anything is possible.

bohoMelisa: Workin' on our Fitness {Cardio Burst}

Today we have a guest post from one of our best friends, bohoMelisa. You may have heard about her in previous posts; like here, or here, or here. We've known Melisa for a long time, and I have never met anyone that works out harder than this chick. She has kicked all of our a$$e$ on many occasions, and we always go back for more. She is very motivating, and pushes you to limits you didn't know you could reach, which sometimes results in a dry heave or two, but that's no biggie to her.
She ain't no joke, and neither is this lil workout she is sharing with you. I've done it quite a few times now and it's torture, but in a gooood way! It's the perfect warm-up that also works out that booty-do, so without further ado…………………………..............................……………………………………………………………………….

{bohoMelisa}

I like to work out. I want to sweat profusely, feel like I am about to die and if I throw up at the end that is an added bonus. I completely understand there are few people who want to work out that hard. And for that fact, it has been hard to find a workout partner. I grew up with my dads work philosophy of, "if you have a pulse and functioning legs, there is no reason to stop". Giving up is never an option. Never. EVER.
I stopped working as a pediatric nurse practitioner about a year and a half ago to raise my kids (that's a whole different story). So being the Type A OCD person I am, I needed to direct my energy somewhere else. Working out became my new obsession. I mean, I am a wife and mom of 3 so I only had a couple hours a day to feed this new obsession. This means I had to get in, get 'er done and get out. I am not a trainer, I don't claim to be and I don't want to be. But I have been in the gym enough times, played college sports and am fairly confident with my anatomy and physiology knowledge to workout effectively and efficiently. A short cardio burst to get my heart rate up and then some weights is my routine a couple days a week. The other days I like to do pure cardio for at least 45 minutes.
Here is a short calorie blasting treadmill workout (a good warm up before weights or more cardio) :
• 30 seconds on a low speed (5-6)
• 30 seconds on a medium speed (6-7)
• 30 seconds on a medium/high speed (6.5-7.5) - this will be your speed for all the hills so will need to be maintained.
• 45 seconds on incline 5 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline) at the same medium/high speed
• 45 seconds on incline 5 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline)
• 45 seconds on incline 7.5 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline)
• 45 seconds on incline 7.5 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline)
• 45 seconds on incline 10 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline)
• 45 seconds on incline 10 at same medium/high speed
• 15 second recover flat (zero incline)
Now for speed work!
• 20 seconds - high speed (level 8.5 or more)
• 10 seconds rest - hop off treadmill with feet on the sides
Repeat above speed work x 8
Recover medium speed (level 6-7) for 1 min

Challenge yourself not to stop except for the rest times. If you need to, slow down, but try not to stop. Keep changing up your workouts so you don't get bored and your muscles stay confused!

Here are a few songs that get me pumped up:

So, if you see a girl sweating, looking like death and possibly throwing up at the gym, wave because it might be me! ;)

Just do it,
bohoMelisa

Guest Blogger - bohoCRUSH Carla

Empowerment. It’s such an easy thing – positive reinforcement – but the effects of someone else believing in your potential are HUGE. Imagine how successful we could all be if we had this on a regular basis – like a vitamin!

And it works across all realms of life, from a stay-at-home mom to an executive. When my sister (who doesn't have kids of her own yet) tells me I am an awesome mom, I not only believe her, but I feel that I have to live up to her words daily. Until I crash again and need to hear it again. Luckily for me, I have a wonderful support system in terms of my family and friends that someone always knows when to say the right thing at the right time.
My point? Even if you are totally caught up in your life and your things – there has to be someone you know that you can give this gift to.

BohoSarah has given me this gift on more than one occasion. She tells it to me like it is, sometimes even to a fault– but her belief in me makes me believe in myself. I think we all need this on a regular basis. Maybe not daily, but often.

And I kid you not, there are days when I just don’t want to get out of bed, and I have a pretty darn good life! But I hear my sister’s words or Sarah’s and I dust myself off, fix my hair and put something cute on and find my cojones and that belief that I am a good mom and a good writer, editor, etc.

So, go out and empower someone you love, respect, look up to or just have a girl crush on (oh yeah, it has to be a girl – we gotta stick together, ladies) – and make some magic happen!

Peace.

Deep thoughts by Erin Gilmore…

**(cue sound of a waterfall and Native American flute)

Before one reads deep thoughts from a complete stranger…Hello I’m Erin Gilmore; a snap shot should be revealed that explains the zany force behind such thoughts.
 ram·bling WOMAN
       1.    Often or habitually roaming; wandering, sprawling haphazardly; unplanned
        2.    Lacking a plan
        3.    Nomadic; wandering
        4.    For the person writing this blog, a necessary action to find bliss.

I have lived many places, taken many jobs, all before landing in the great city of Houston and meeting the eccentric people in this melting pot. A city where men in cowboy hats stroll next to women in $1,000 suits, a charming mix of boots and sophistication, rough neck oil workers and astronauts, stock brokers and bull riders.

I have lived in Spain, studied language and bullfighters; in New York, learned the value of a dollar; I’ve lived in Illinois, where I learned the value of family; I’ve lived in St. Louis, where I learned the significance of work ethic; In Miami, I evaluated what is real beauty?; I reside in Houston and I am learning how to live.

I have worked as a baseball bat carver at Busch Stadium, a grocery store checkout girl, a promotional announcer, an NFL Rams cheerleader, a go-go dancer, a waitress, a Passport Specialist, a bridal dress model, a marketing specialists, a bartender, a Disney Princess for a day in Orlando, an academic editor, a student, an admission representative, a recruiter……and finally a Sales Supervisor in Oil & Gas; finally, a job I love. By never giving up on my dream jobs, becoming a Senator and having a reoccurring role on Days of our Lives, I get to find sprinkles of my dreams in my current situation.

My dad always told me, “Keep in mind that the average millionaire goes broke nearly 3.2 times in their life…Donald Trump, Walt Disney, Milton Hershey…even Wayne Newton!”  Okay, I added Wayne Newton, but it’s true!

I am a hopeless romantic, forgetting reality for the sake of utter insanity.  I live to experience “butterflies.” I have loved…and lost.  Urban Dictionary.com defines a hopeless romantic as; “This person is in love with love. They believe in fairy tales.  They’re not to be confused as stalkers or creepy because that's not what a hopeless romantic is.”  Thanks, Urban Dictionary, for not labeling me a creep, however I wouldn’t mind because I grew up loving TLC’s song Creep.

My ideal recipe for a lean mean man cocktail is as follows:
#1. The Winklevoss twins from Facebook (they count as 1)
#2. Cesar Millan “The dog whisperer”, he just seems sensitive to the needs of others…and he       would let me have as many dogs as I wanted.
#3.Simon Baker from The Mentalist (see exhibit C…no explanation needed)
#4. Will Ferrell (every girl needs to laugh a little)

I am also a romantic when it comes to traveling to far off places, my family, and every animal in the animal kingdom…except possums…I can’t do possums. I think it is much easier to show compassion to animals…they are never cruel, they do not judge.

My best friend is my sister Morgan, we live together in Houston.  We also live in our humble abode with our good friend and my Texas saving grace………Grace Salinas.    “Sisters… is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, but once the sisters are grown, it becomes the strongest relationship.”

Did I tell you I was going to give you deep thoughts after my brief vignette?  Deep thoughts come from my past, I cannot give advice about life…I’m still trying to live it; I can only strive to make every effort to change unhappiness in my life when I first see it.  However, it always seems as if my mother sees it before I do, Why are mom’s always right? Because they have done it already, experienced it, cried about it, laughed about it, and dreamed about it.

I do know this:
*The best way to not gain weight on a business trip is to pack a scale in your suitcase.  If you gain a pound, you lay off that complimentary bread at dinner.
*Adding cashews to soup can make it a meal.
*You get more value using your hotel rewards points internationally; I would rather look out my window and see the Eiffel tower than a beltway anyway.
*Sally Hansen sells eyebrow wax strips and cuticle remover just like the salons…to be used in dire emergencies.
*Don’t leave Nair on for more than 7 minutes…ouch!
*Oil is not found in underground pools...it can be found as droplets of oil, in the pores of rock.
*There are no carbs in pork rhines.
*Atkins can change your life in 15 days…until you see the word “encrusted” on a menu.
*The Texas flag can be flown at the same height as the American flag, because it was the only state that was once a country.
*Albert Einstein went without a job for 2 years after he graduated from college.
*If you order a shot of espresso in your coffee, you won’t be seen running to the coffee machine 3 times in one hour.
*Do it yourself dry clean bags actually work!
*If you damage your wheel rim, it can actually be heated and molded back into place.

This is all I have for now…Thank you to the ladies of bohoBlack.

The Covetur

The Coveteur.

I have been an avid follower of The Coveteur for over a year now, and am consistently stunned at how well they stage all their shoots. I know from experience it takes a lot of work to get the right angle, and it totally makes or breaks your shot! So, I am spreading The Coveteur love today and showing you guys all my favorite shots.

Kelly Wearstler

Oh my gosh, that jacket is insane! Bohojc has been coveting the Nightingale bag for quite sometime and I think this shot will really push her over the edge. Visit her store here: Kelly Wearstler.

One day I will have drawers and hanging space for all my baubles.

Love the layout of this house.

Tabitha Simmons

I was totally oblivious to Tabitha Simmons and her awesome shoe line, until she was featured on The Coveteur. As you can probably imagine her style has an edge factor but is still very feminine. Check out her shoes here: Tabitha Simmons.

This chair is the sexiest thing I have ever seen, I would get so much work done if I had that set up.

I love how this closest and bathroom are set up.

This rug...lost for words.

Aggh...gimme gimme gimme!

Aimee Song

Again, this is a blogger I wasn't super familiar with but have been on her site from time to time. Since, seeing this post I have been hooked! I am currently stalking the web for her jeans and this outfit on the left! Check out her blog: Song Of Style.

I am kind of all over suede right now, so these two jackets are right up my alley!

I am not even a prints type of girl, but these skirts and that dress have totally persuaded me!

I am totally obsessing over her right now! I am dying for those jeans.
