Family Day Ideas // Color Fun Fest 5K 2014

Let's get phys-ical, phys-ical!

Join bohoBlack in the Color FunFest 5K on November 1st at Sam Houston Race Park.

Color Fun Fest benefits Free Arts for Abused Children:

Free Arts programs inspire hope in the lives of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, poverty and homelessness through innovative creative arts programs and positive interactions with caring adult volunteers.

Free Arts envisions a society of individuals from different communities, cultures and life experiences connecting through the healing power of art to interrupt the cycle of violence, create understanding, build self-esteem and nurture better lives.

We're in! And we have a discount code!

Here's the rundown:

Color FunFest has two 'waves': the Day Wave and the Night Wave

Day Wave Leaves at 5 pm
Night Wave Leaves at 7 pm

Day Wave Packet Pickup - 2 pm
Night Wave Packet Pickup - 4 pm

There are five color stations that blast runners with colored corn starch as they pass by. By the end of the run, everyone is covered from head to toe in neon colors. It sounds absolutely ridiculous, which is why we're so excited about it. Seems like a fun way to spend quality time with the family and get the kids involved in a worthwhile cause.

Our family friend Melisa (you may remember the KILLER bohoBodies post that she wrote HERE) attended the Color Fun Fest last year with her kids and had great things to say:
"Last year was our first year to do the Color Run and it far exceeded my expectations! My whole family did it (3 kids - 5 yo, 4yo and 2 yo) and we LOVED it!! My kids giggled the whole time and loved getting messy! We will definitely do it again this year!!"

Use promo code BOHOBLACK to receive a $30 entry fee for adults (Regular Price $60)

Non-Adult Prices:
Festival Non-Runner: $10
Kids & Non-Runners: $5

The Moonlight Dolls Opening Weekend at Prohibition // October 30th, 31st & November 1st

Opening Night at Prohibition is Finally Here!

October 30th, 31st & November 1st
In our first immersive theater production...

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH
by Edgar Allan Poe

What better weekend to open on than Halloween?! This show will be different from anything we have ever done before. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, our own Prince Prospero is throwing the greatest (and most ominous) party in all of the land!

Instead of a sit-down dinner, guests can indulge themselves in the lush buffets & luxurious libations. Wander around Prince Prospero's grande fete while being entertained throughout the evening. Imagine the most opulent, over-the-top party that you could ever attend. Then throw in some fire dancers, singers, aerialists, beautiful women and 1800's ambiance on top of that and you'll have The Masque of the Red Death (Moonlight Dolls-style).

Costumes are encouraged and guests will not be permitted without them (although if they forget their costume, they can buy a mask at the door for $5).

Here is a link to purchase tickets: http://www.showclix.com/event/MasqueoftheRedDeath

Below is more specific information pertaining to each ticket level.

Hope to see you guys there! For questions about tickets email admin@themoonlightdolls.com

The Moonlight Doll's First Immersive Theatre Production

Playing 3 nights on Halloween weekend:

The Masque of the Red Death - October 30th - SOFT OPENING of the Prohibition Theater
The Masque of the Red Death- October 31st - Halloween Night
The Masque of the Red - November 1st - Day of the Dead

THE "Red Death" had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal -- the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.

Safe in the confines of his castle walls, Prince Prospero is throwing a most opulent party. Overflowing with wine & beautiful women, his soiree is most impressive to his high society friends. With an abundance of entertainment & gluttonous buffets, Prince Prospero and his guests foolishly believe they can be saved from the gory epidemic.

Join The Moonlight Dolls in this ominous, immersive theatrical production. Be one of Prince Prospero's guests and explore his lavish masquerade. Indulge in the food, the wine & the endless entertainment in an attempt to escape the inevitable "Red Death"...

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH is a fully interactive theater experience. All of the Prince's guests will receive access to a smorgasbord of decadent food provisions while continuously touring his luxuriant fete.

Adair Kitchen's Kale & Quinoa Salad {Trying to Lose that Baby Weight}

Lately my attempt at cutting these extra post-pregnancy pounds has been slow and at times down right discouraging. Per my doctors orders any workouts involving a tight sports bra are out if I want to continue breastfeeding, which of course I do, so I've had to shift my focus from cardio to weights, yoga and of course, my diet. Boooo!

I try and start every day with a green smoothie, usually using Sarah's recipe found here, and then for lunch I try and make this salad or something like it. My thought is these 2 healthy options surely cancel out my nightly vino, right? ;)

Luckily this salad is delicious. I constantly craved it when I was pregnant with Donovan and not much has changed, except now I make it at home verses spending $12 and battling the galleria traffic. I love you Adair Kitchen, but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do…..

So, without further ado:

 {Shredded Kale & Quinoa Salad with Chicken}

Disclaimer: I would have NEVER ordered this salad. To me, the whole kale/quinoa fad bugged and sounded blah. However, I was having some belly aches from the crap I was eating while pregnant, so in an attempt to eat healthier I ordered this, and as you can see, it was love at first bite.

What you need:

  • 1 Lemon
  • Olive Oil
  • Shredded Kale
  • Feta Cheese Crumbles
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Quinoa (keen-wah)
  • 1 chicken breast
  • Tony Chachere's (optional, but you should definitely use it)

Chicken//

I bake my chicken because it's fast and easy.
  • Set oven to 400 degrees
  • Massage chicken breast with lemon juice from half a lemon and about 2 tbsp of olive oil. {more lemon never hurts, hell more olive oil never hurts, this is really personal preference}
  • Sprinkle Tony C's on both sides. {Tony C's changed my life}
  • Place in pan in oven for 20-22 minutes.
  • DATS IT

QUINOA//

Quinoa is very simple and the directions on how to cook should be on the package, but just in case:
  • Combine 3/4c of quinoa with 1 1/2c of water or broth
  • Bring to boil
  • Reduce to low, cover & cook for 10 minutes
  • Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes, covered
  • All done, son.

SALAD//
  • Use about 2 handfuls of kale ^^
  • Squeeze the other half of your lemon onto the salad and add about 2-3 tbsp of olive oil.
  • Massage, massage, massage! {The trick in getting kale to not taste like crap is to massage them greens real good! So get your hands lemon-y and olive oil-y as you massage the yuck away}

BRING IT ALL TOGETHER//

  • Add the baked chicken
  • Add a dollop of quinoa
  • Add a handful of dried cranberries
  • Sprinkle crumbled feta

TOSS DAT SALAD & VOILA//

So that's it!

I probably should have taken a better pic, but I was hungry, I'm always hungry, it's the Murdock curse, (my mom's side of the family).

Note: It's a pretty big salad, but after nursing baby boy I'm typically starving, so I wolf this down with no problem, you may have enough to share with someone.

See, everybody's happy, especially lil butterball^^
(We love selfies.)

What's your Halloween Costume?

Sweet Mo

Mo has been on the go more than ever!  He is walking and talking, swinging and weeee'ing.  He came to Dax’s school this morning and watching him on the playground with all of the other kids, on this beautiful day, my gratitude for this little dude and his progress is overwhelming.  He starts speech therapy next week and I’m excited to hear all of the wonderful words that will come out of his mouth.  Other than that, he is right on target, keeping up with Dax & Driscoe and bringing smiles to so many!  Oh, and Jason cut his bangs :)

Drinking My Greens.

I would not call myself a super healthy eater.  I eat preservatives, I eat fast food, my fruit and veggies are rarely organic and I will pound some gluten.  I love an ice cold Coca Cola and it's hard to explain my love and devotion to red wine.  BUT, every morning I combat those yummy habits with a green juice.  I don't have a fancy juicer, I just toss everything in the blender and chug it down.  Many mornings it is replacing my coffee...I think it gives me more energy and definitely makes me feel better about what I'm drinking, but mostly, I have seen physical changes in my skin and vanity is the best motivation.

My Daily Green Juice:
1 cup of Kale (about a handful)
1/2 cup of spinach
1 stalk of celery
1 banana or 1 green apple (depending on what i have)
1/2 cucumber
2 handfuls of ice
1 1/2 cups of water
Blend all of the ingredients until smooth and drink it up!

There are so many variations and I love adding a tablespoon of chia seeds and flax seeds to keep me full longer.  I can also share it with the bohoBabies, that green mustache makes ya feel pretty damn good as a mom!

Cheers,
bohoSarah
